Curbing Growing Youth Violence

I have noticed a number of cities enacting curfews or making them earlier for teenagers in response to rising youth violence and crime. I was shocked to hear cities had 12am curfews in place. 12am? When I grew up you had to be off the streets when the street lights came on at dusk. What business do kids have on the streets late at night? They should be at home with their families, not wandering the streets looking for trouble.

I met a father recently that lets his 10 year old stay outside until 10 pm and I was shocked! I had to be in bed by 9pm when I was ten! In the summer when it is still light outside late I had to be in by 7pm.

First children thrive in an environment of consistency. That means waking up the same time and going to bed the same time every day. That means the setting of consistent rules and punishment for breaking those rules. So I think this is a good idea, but I think the curfew should be 7pm not 10pm. Since most kids have to get up at 6am to go to school they should be in bed by 10pm so they can get 8 hours of sleep.

Children need parents not a friend in their parents. So start being a parent!

  1. As a kid, I belive that it really depends on how responsible you are. There are plenty of responsible children who are perfectly ok staying out late, and others that aren’t.
