Terror Trials Round-up!

Cleveland Muslim Leader Convicted of Lying About Terror Ties Deported

A Muslim leader from Ohio who was convicted of lying about his involvement with a group the U.S. government designated a terrorist organization has been deported to his native Palestinian territories, immigration authorities said Friday.

Fawaz Damra, 46, was convicted in June 2004 of concealing his ties to Palestinian Islamic Jihad when he applied for U.S. citizenship in 1994.

Damra, who served imam at Ohio’s largest mosque, the Islamic Center of Cleveland, was deported on Thursday, said Tim Counts, spokesman for the U.S. Bureau of Immigration and Customs Enforcement. He was flown to Amman, Jordan, then crossed to the West Bank.

Pakistani Immigrant Sentenced to 30 Years for Plot to Bomb New York Subway

A Pakistani immigrant was sentenced to 30 years in prison Monday for hatching an unsuccessful plot to blow up a busy Manhattan subway station as revenge for wartime abuses of Iraqis.

Shahawar Matin Siraj, 24, was arrested on the eve of the 2004 Republican National Convention. Though there was no proof he ever obtained explosives or was linked to any terror organizations, prosecutors said his intentions were ominous: He wanted to blow up the Herald Square subway station, a bustling transportation hub located beneath Macy’s flagship department store.

Appeals Court to Consider Reinstating Conspiracy Charge Against Al Qaeda Suspect Jose Padilla

A federal appellate court is weighing whether to restore the only charge against alleged Al Qaeda operative Jose Padilla that carries a sentence of up to life in prison.

The 11th Circuit Court of Appeals was set to hear arguments Wednesday over the conspiracy charge that was dismissed in August by a judge who ruled it was essentially the same as two other terrorism-support counts against Padilla and two co-defendants.

Judge Delays Trial of Alleged Al Qaeda Operative Jose Padilla

A federal judge Friday ordered a three-month delay for the trial of alleged Al Qaeda operative Jose Padilla and two others, in part to allow time for a full evaluation of Padilla’s mental competency.

U.S. District Judge Marcia Cooke set a new trial date of April 16. It was the third time the case had been postponed.
