Language Immersion in Colleges Growing

From an article in the Las Vegas Sun:

Dapo is one of 22 students living at the university’s language house – one of the newest examples of language immersion that is growing more popular at colleges and universities around the country.

Teachers and students say that increasing globalization, with more Internet and television access to news and businesses around the world, has fueled increased enrollment in foreign language courses.

“We are allowed to speak English to guests who don’t understand, but the rest of the time we are supposed to speak in French or Spanish, and sometimes you forget that not everyone understands,” said Jeff Dapo, a Spanish major from Columbus.

More schools are requiring or recommending immersion as part of a foreign language degree, and language houses and dorms provide an alternative for students who can’t afford to study abroad.

It sounds innocent enough doesn’t it? But, couldn’t it be just one more step of teaching our children to be “global”? Could it be that the last step in brainwashing our children that being American is not that important? If you add up all the other crap they are teaching our children, doesn’t this seem like the last step towards teaching children that America isn’t all that important, and we are all global citizens?

  1. Are you being serious? That statement has to be the most backwards thing I have ever read. This is planets Earth not America. We are sharing the world the only thing seperating you from the rest of the world is a diferent language. It would be brainwashing them if you did not teach them another language. Yes I live in States and I am not a hippe.
